2025 Program Update

Following 10 years of consecutive summer programs, the eScience Institute has sunsetted its DSSG program. We are grateful to the 133 student fellows and 42 project leads who participated in the program over the course of a decade. If you landed on this page because you were interested in applying to be a part of the UW DSSG program, please see our current programs and stay tuned for new offerings to come!

The UW Data Science for Social Good summer program brings together students, stakeholders, data scientists, and domain researchers to work on focused, collaborative projects for societal benefit.

To tackle complex societal challenges, UW DSSG teams take a multi-dimensional approach that integrates data science techniques, ethical thinking, and stakeholder engagement. Student Fellows work with real-world data on cross-disciplinary teams led by Project Leads from academia, nonprofits, and government, along with data scientists at the eScience Institute who offer technical expertise and guidance. In addition to project-based collaboration and mentoring, students also participate in tutorials, workshops, and career discussions. This 10-week long, hands-on program emphasizes learning opportunities for all participants as they collaboratively navigate intensive teamwork in pursuit of Data Science for Social Good.
