Research Goals and Domain
The National Artificial Intelligence Research Resource (NAIRR) is a National Science Foundation funded effort aiming to connect U.S. researchers to the computational, data, software, model and training resources they need to participate in AI research. As a member of the CloudBank team, the UW eScience Institute is engaging the Scientific Software Engineering Center to investigate how teams have implemented AI and ML in various public clouds with the intention to develop resources for CloudBank that will bolster cloud adoption and streamline workflows for future teams.
Software Problem
SSEC conducted interviews with AI researchers across several disciplines to determine how CloudBank could better support them. More specifically, the team identified challenges faced related to cloud usage patterns, specific architectures, and using the CloudBank portal to access AI resources.
Software Solution
SSEC is now working with CloudBank to build a solution that will bridge the gap between researchers’ computing needs and the services that cloud providers presently offer. Development is slated to begin later this year.
Impact
The project aims to ensure CloudBank is better equipped to support incoming NAIRR-funded researchers and SSEC is set up to continue contributing software expertise as their needs grow.
