Cloud 101 Hands-On Immersion Workshop held

UW Research Computing, in conjunction with the eScience Institute, held its first Cloud 101 Hands-On Immersion Workshop on April 4, 2017, at the Husky Union Building. There were 46 registered participants, including researchers, faculty and students from the main UW campus, as well as researchers from Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and graduate students from UW Tacoma.

The one-day workshop introduced participants to three major cloud providers: Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud Platform, with two focused ‘get stuff done’ activities. In the first activity, participants learned to provision computer resources and build a lightweight system to encourage collaboration and data sharing.

Secondly, they were introduced to configuring and running tasks on the high performance computing service on AWS. In the process, participants also learned to compare costs between different cloud providers and on-site computing infrastructure.

The instructors for the workshop were Rob Fatland and Amanda Tan from UW-IT.  Ariel Rokem, Bernease Herman and Valentina Staneva from the eScience Institute and Don Setiawan from the Applied Physics Lab were also on hand to provide support.
