The UW Scientific Software Engineering Center
is now accepting pilot projects for 2024
The Scientific Software Engineering Center (SSEC) at UW provides researchers with access to full-time professional engineers and state of the art technology to develop open source, secure, and robust software. SSEC engineers solve difficult software problems across a breadth of disciplinary domains by employing modern software development practices for open source software impact at scale, and using technologies such as machine learning, generative AI, cloud computing, deployment optimization and scalable data management.
We are seeking proposals from UW researchers who have clear software engineering needs for pilot projects to be conducted by SSEC starting spring / summer 2024. Viable projects will be 4-6 months in duration and must have funding in place to support the software engineering work. To apply, we require completion of an Expression of Interest (EOI) describing the scope of work, science goals, and expected technical challenges. The ideal proposal will clearly identify the available funding source(s), a preferred timeline, and a plan for sustaining the project long term. Examples of projects we are not able to take on at this time include building a website, converting proprietary file formats and sustained maintenance of existing software infrastructure.
Each project will be asked to identify a primary point of contact (can be the PI or other group member) who will be responsive and available to connect regularly with the SSEC software engineering team. Additionally for successful sustained engineering, it is ideal for each project to also identify a maintainer, (or GitHub community) who has the technical skills to oversee the software beyond SSEC’s engagement. We find that open communication channels deepen the technical engagement and support project success and sustainability.
