UW Data Science Seminar: Ryan Hausen

When

02/12/2026
4:30 pm – 5:20 pm

Please join us for a UW Data Science Seminar featuring Johns Hopkins University Research Software Engineer Ryan Hausen on Thursday, February 12th  from 4:30 to 5:20 p.m. PT. The seminar will be held in IEB G109.

“Concept to Compute: Accelerating Science with JAX”

Abstract:

Modern scientific research increasingly relies on rapid iteration between conceptual models and computational experiments. JAX bridges this gap by offering a high‑performance, NumPy‑like interface combined with automatic differentiation, composable transformations, and hardware acceleration. This talk explores how JAX enables users to move seamlessly from mathematical ideas to efficient, scalable computations with minimal code changes.

Speaker Bio: Ryan Hausen is a Research Software Engineer at the Data Science and AI Institute at Johns Hopkins University. He received his PhD in Computer Science at the University of California, Santa Cruz in 2022 where his research focused on developing novel machine learning approaches for large scale astronomical data. In his role as a Research Software Engineer, he works with scientists across disciplines and institutions to tackle complex problems.

The 2025-2026 seminars will be held in person, and are free and open to the public.
