Call for Invited Presenters – UW Data Science Seminar – University of Washington Seattle
We are inviting applications for guest presenters for the UW Data Science Seminar, an annual lecture series at the University of Washington that hosts scholars working across applied areas of data science, such as the arts, engineering, humanities and sciences along with methodological areas in data science, such as computer science, applied math and statistics. The web version of this solicitation can be found here.
We are looking to host scholars for presentations between October 2021 and May 2022. If you are interested in being one of our presenters, please read and complete this application. Consideration of applications will begin immediately and will continue until spots are filled.
The UW Data Science Seminar, a nearly decade-old seminar series, is hosted by the eScience Institute and the Engineering Data Science Institute at the University of Washington. The eScience Institute, formed in 2008, was created to advance data-intensive discovery in all fields, including the arts, engineering, humanities and sciences. Our presenters come from all domains across the university campus and include occasional external speakers from regional partners, governmental agencies and industry.
Presentations should be oriented towards a diverse audience with basic data science literacy. Attendees will have domain science backgrounds including, but not limited to, astronomy, biology, chemistry, digital arts, education, engineering, and many others. We encourage presentations that engage in technical details but do so in an approachable manner suitable for a broad audience. We accommodate a variety of formats for the presentation including traditional science talks, virtual studio tours for digital artists and live demonstrations of code and algorithms. We welcome applications from all levels of scholars from junior, mid-career, and senior faculty, staff scientists, post doctoral fellows and graduate students.
The eScience Data Science Seminar Series offers an excellent platform for dissemination of the presenter’s work to a broad interdisciplinary data science and domain science audience. Speakers will benefit from having their work promoted through online channels and eScience social media outlets including recordings on Youtube, Twitter posts, and advertising through the eScience weekly bulletins and eScience website. This will allow the presenters to reach a wider audience than their own field, especially if the work has relevance beyond their own research application.
The speaker series is a collaboration between the eScience Institute and the Engineering Data Science Institute at the University of Washington.
We will be hosting a hybrid event allowing for both online and in-person participation. We will follow the University of Washington guidelines and policies during the COVID-19 pandemic as well as the recommendations of the University of Washington Center for Teaching and Learning for teaching remotely. Presenters from outside of the Seattle area will be hosted virtually for the 2021-2022 academic year. We will arrange for a day of virtual interviews and discussions with UW faculty, post-docs, staff and students.
We look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
eScience Data Science Seminar Series Organizers
