Biography
Juandalyn Burke is a research scientist and Conference Director at the University of Washington’s eScience Institute. She received her B.S. from Spelman College in environmental science and studies with an emphasis on microbiology, analytical chemistry, and biochemistry; an MPH from the University of Michigan in environmental and occupational epidemiology; and her PhD in biomedical and health informatics from the University of Washington. Her PhD work focused on using stochastic, agent-based modeling to predict HIV within-host and between-host outcomes and exploring optimization techniques that assist in creating policies that improve health outcomes. Juandalyn’s work and research efforts have used computer science, statistics, and informatics to address a diverse set of subject areas such as voting rights, mental health, biochemistry, environmental bioremediation, environmental epidemiology, maternal and child health, pharmacogenomics and infectious disease. Her current role with the eScience Institute is also the Conference Director for recent and past fellows (including her participation as a UW eScience Data for Social Good fellow) of previous the data science for good programs from over 19 universities and organizations, including data for good programs in the UK and Canada. Juandalyn has also always been a strong advocate for building welcoming, empathetic, and inclusive environments and opportunities for students in higher education, research, and beyond.
