Chirag Shah is an Associate Professor in Information School, an Adjunct Associate Professor in Paul G. Allen School of Computer Science & Engineering, and an Adjunct Associate Professor in Human Centered Design & Engineering (HCDE) at University of Washington (UW). His research revolves around intelligent systems. On one hand, he is trying to make search and recommendation systems smart, proactive, and integrated. On the other hand, he is investigating how such systems can be made fair, transparent, and ethical. The former area is Search/Recommendation and the latter falls under Responsible AI.
He received his PhD in Information Science from University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill. I hold an MTech, Computer Science & Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras, India and an MS, Computer Science from University of Massachusetts (UMass) Amherst. He has published and talked extensively on topics related to search and recommendation, social media, and fairness in ML. He also works closely with industrial research labs on cutting-edge problems, typically as a visiting researcher. The most recent engagements included Spotify (2018), Amazon (2019), and Microsoft Research AI (2020).
