David Beck

Dr. David Beck is the eScience Institute Director of Research & Education and a Research Associate Professor in Chemical Engineering. Dr. Beck has been associated with eScience since 2009, formerly serving as the Director of Research for the Life Sciences. For more than ten years, he has organized the eScience Community / Data Science Seminar. His research focuses on applications of molecular data science for energy, health and the environment.

Dr. Beck is the associate director of the NSF NRT Data Intensive Research Enabling Clean Tech (DIRECT, training grant) and regularly teaches CSE 583 (Software Design for Data Scientists), CHEME/MSE/CHEM 545 (Data Science Methods Enabling Clean Energy Research), CHEME/MSE/CHEM 546 (Software Engineering for Molecular Data Scientists), CHEME/MSE/CHEM 547 (Molecular Data Science Capstone), and he organizes CHEME 599, the university wide current topics in data science seminar also known as the eScience Community Seminar.

His major research areas include structural, systems and synthetic biology and more recently molecular data science applications in energy, including perovskites, electrolytes, and other materials for energy.

Dr. Beck has a Ph.D. in Medicinal Chemistry / Biomolecular Structure & Design from the University of Washington and a B.S. in Computer Science from Drexel University.
