Where

eScience Institute
WRF Data Science Studio, UW Physics/Astronomy Tower, 6th Floor, Seattle, Washington, 98195

The eScience Institute is offering a 4-day workshop on introductory artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) methods for structured data. The course will use example datasets to demonstrate a variety of tools for exploring structured data, such as principal component analysis, regression, random forests, and neural networks in Python using Scikit-learn and PyTorch. Large language models such as ChatGPT will not be covered.

Learning about AI/ML can be initially overwhelming. The goal of this workshop is to get researchers past that initial hump. The lessons will introduce researchers who have some programming experience but little practice using AI/ML to the world of AI/ML data analysis. The course will survey several powerful AI/ML methods that are commonly used in research using live-coded examples. Lessons will emphasize intuitive understanding of the methods and practical considerations rather than theoretical understanding.

Course Details

  • When: Mon.–Thu. June 1st-4th, 9:00 am–noon each day
  • Where: WRF Data Science Studio (In Person / No Online option)
  • Registration: Required ($10); see this page for information on registering. Registration is limited to 25 seats.
  • Prerequisites: Students should be comfortable writing simple programs in Python and familiar with the NumPy and Pandas libraries. You do not need a background in math or statistics, but familiarity with linear algebra and basic probability are helpful. See this page on how to prepare for the workshop.
