Brian is currently an NLM postdoctoral fellow in the Biomedical Informatics and Engineering Department at the University of Washington. His research focuses on using Natural Language Processing for decision support in veterinary medicine and the applicability of developed methods to human clinical text. Dr. Hur holds a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Washington State University and a PhD in Natural Language Processing and Epidemiology from the University of Melbourne.

During his PhD, he concentrated on developing and improving NLP methods to extract data from free-text clinical records to support antimicrobial stewardship efforts in Australia. He continues to collaborate on projects applying these methods to aid antimicrobial stewardship efforts with a One Health approach.

In addition to his research background, Brian has experience in veterinary medicine, treating small and exotic animals, including time spent at the Turtle Rehabilitation Center on the Great Barrier Reef. He has also gained valuable engineering experience, working for companies such as Microsoft and Boeing, and contributing to several startups.

Additionally, he is always open to talk about collaborations to help make machine learning more useful to clinicians or data science projects in general.
