Hannah Joy-Warren is a postdoctoral fellow at the Cooperative Institute for Climate, Ocean, and Ecosystem Studies (CICOES) and sits jointly between UW Oceanography and NOAA’s Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory. Hannah is a polar oceanographer studying the role of phytoplankton species composition in carbon flows. Her research aims to provide a more detailed picture of carbon fluxes in the Southern Ocean, to enable a more accurate attribution of biological processes to carbon cycling.

Prior to UW and NOAA-PMEL, Hannah was a Fulbright Scholar (2021) at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden, where she used autonomous platforms to investigate submesoscale bio-physical coupling in the Southern Ocean. She completed her Ph.D. in Earth System Science at Stanford University (2020) and her B.Sc. in Geophysical Sciences at the University of Chicago (2012).
