Vani Mandava is the Head of Engineering for the UW Scientific Software Engineering Center within eScience Institute. In her role, she is responsible for setting up the SSEC organization and work with research investigators to define the priorities and scope of software infrastructure that will strengthen the scientific software community. The primary mission of the SSEC is to collaborate with researchers from UW and around the world to create visionary, innovative and resilient solutions for pressing research and societal challenges.
Prior to joining UW in September 2022, Vani was leading Trustworthy AI research engagements at Microsoft Research Outreach as Director of Data Science. She has over two decades of experience related to shipping software that scales across clients, enterprise, and cloud services. While at Microsoft she worked on teams in Office and Bing to help build software used by millions of users. She also spent a decade at Microsoft Research driving numerous successful collaborations across academic, government and industry research to enable robust and reproducible scientific tools and pipelines. She is deeply interested in creating software driven solutions that can contribute to open and reproducible science. Vani Mandava is a true northwest implant. From Mumbai, India, she studied in Pune and went to graduate school at the University at Buffalo, State University of New York, prior to moving to Seattle to join Microsoft.
