Dr. Abernethy is an Assistant Professor in the department of Biomedical Informatics and Medical Education, with a joint appointment in Health Services. His research focuses on integrating complex biomedical and “omic” data to improve the analysis and interpretation of this information. He also develops models and simulations of complex systems to reveal patterns in the behavior and organization of genetic, social, and organizational networks. He partners with public health organizations from local to international levels to improve sharing and interpretation of genomic and epidemiologic data, and was recently awarded a grant from the Center of Excellence for Emerging and Zoonotic Animal Diseases at Kansas State University to integrate data from diverse epidemic models. Dr. Abernethy received a dual B.S. in Applied Mathematics and Biochemistry from North Carolina State University, and holds a PhD in Biomedical Informatics from Stanford University.
