Postdoctoral Research Associate, Dept. of Sociology & Evans School of Public Policy
Dr. Somashekhar is a postdoctoral research associate jointly in the Department of Sociology and the Evans School of Public Policy and Governance. He researches how retail growth and decline affect local neighborhoods, communities, and labor markets in urban and suburban areas. More specifically, he studies the effects of retail change on urban and suburban communities in the context of immigrant entrepreneurship, gentrification, and health disparities.
Dr. Somashekhar teaches statistical methods and is proficient in the use of relational databases for geospatial analysis. Moreover, he works with large and small data sets that come from a variety of data sources, including the U.S. Census, Yelp.com, and commercial business directories such as Dun & Bradstreet and ReferenceUSA. He recently won an award from the American Association of Geographers for his research. Dr. Somashekhar received a B.S. in Engineering Management Systems from Columbia University and a Ph.D. in Sociology from Princeton University.
