John Vidale is a professor and Director of Southern California Earthquake Center at University of Southern California. He is an expert in earthquakes, earth structure, and seismic hazard.
While at the University of Washington, Vidale watched the earthquakes and volcanoes in Oregon and Washington with about 500 distributed realtime sensors, scrutinizing strange slow earthquakes and landsliding, and he was trying to implement an earthquake early warning system for the Pacific Northwest so we could gain a few seconds or even minutes of warning before suffering the strongest shaking in our ever-dangerous earthquakes.
