I study how animals learn and interact with one another. Using bumblebees as a model system, I am developing and applying machine learning and computer vision methods to conduct high-throughput behavioral experiments. My experiments replace human observers and manually-scored ethograms with video cameras, video processing, and automatic behavioral classification.
I use these techniques to understand animal behaviors and deliver rewards in real time. My works sheds light on the subtleties of how animals learn, especially with uncertain sensory cues. These advances make new behavioral experiments reproducible and feasible, and can be applied to studying behavior in a variety of other situations and systems.
