SUMMARY:UW Data Science Seminar: Don Setiawan and Cordero Core Sr.
DESCRIPTION:\n\nPlease join us for a UW Data Science Seminar on Tuesday\, D
ecember 3rd from 4:30 to 5:20 p.m. PT. The seminar will feature Don Setiaw
an and Cordero Core Sr.\, Senior Research Software Engineers for the UW Sc
ientific Software Engineering Center (SSEC).\n\nThe seminar will be held i
 n the Physics/Astronomy Auditorium (PAA)\, Room A118 - campus map.\n\n\n"
From Earthquakes to Education: Lessons in Research Software Engineering Ac
ross Disciplines"\nAbstract: Housed in the eScience Institute\, the Scient
ific Software Engineering Center (SSEC) works with researchers across vari
ous fields to build robust\, open-source software that advances inquiry an
d fosters community. These reusable tools\, infused with industry best pra
ctices\, accelerate research and sustain discovery beyond SSEC’s involve
ment in the projects.\nJoin us as we explore two projects that showcase th
e versatility of research software engineering in tackling complex challen
ges. In Offshore Geodesy\, we will cover the development of a modular Pyth
on library designed to process sonar data and analyze subsea tectonic defo
rmations. In Coaching Companion\, we will discuss redesigning and optimizi
ng database structures for the Coach and Educator Community Interface (CEC
I)\, a platform that supports professional development for early childhood
educators. Through these examples\, we’ll illustrate how technical solu
tions in software engineering empower innovation and sustainability across
disciplines\, from tectonics to teacher training.\nBio:\nDon Setiawan is
a Senior Research Software Engineer for the UW Scientific Software Enginee
ring Center (SSEC) at eScience Institute. He has expertise in Python progr
 amming\, web development\, geospatial data analytics\, and cloud-based dat
a engineering that he is very excited to share in his role. Don has been a
n Affiliate with UW eScience since 2017 as a Technical Specialist with the
Hackweek program. He has strong skills in interacting with diverse\, mult
i-institutional teams of scientists and software engineers\, in a variety
of contexts\, leading to concrete software development and implementation.
Prior to being a part of SSEC\, Don was working with the UW School of Oce
anography in the Ocean Observatory Initiative (OOI) project as part of the
Regional Cabled Array team. He was a technical lead\, providing software
and research support. He has also worked with the UW Applied Physics Labor
atory in designing\, developing\, and maintaining scientific data analysis
systems across multiple institutes and agencies. Don is a UW School of Oc
eanography alumnus. He focused on geospatial data analysis and management
through the development of wave sensor buoys to study the spatial variabil
ity of oceanic waves.\n\nCordero Core is an accomplished Sr. Software Engi
neer with over 13 years of experience in the software development industry
. Throughout his career\, Cordero has established himself as an expert in
software and machine learning applications. He has successfully delivered
innovative software solutions for diverse industries\, including healthcar
 e\, e-commerce\, aerospace\, and security. Cordero’s profound knowledge
in developing software solutions has led to significant contributions to h
is field\, including a patent (US11347046B2) for his groundbreaking work i
n computational microscopy and digital pathology. His work in this area ha
s helped to revolutionize the imaging and analysis of pathology specimens\
, providing reliable diagnostic information to healthcare professionals. C
ordero is also a member of the Entrepreneur and Practitioner Advisory Boar
d for the Journal of Small Business and Enterprise Development. In this ro
le\, he provides guidance to startups and entrepreneurs\, demonstrating hi
s dedication to mentoring and helping others achieve their business goals.
\n\nIf you are interested\, please join us afterwards for the Seattle Rese
arch Software Engineer (RSE) Meetup\, a FREE event hosted and sponsored by
the Scientific Software Engineering Center (SSEC) @ eScience Institute at
the University of Washington. This networking event is a great opportunit
y for Research Software Engineers\, developers\, and scientists in the Sea
ttle area to connect\, network\, and build a community of RSEs.\nThe UW Da
ta Science Seminar is an annual lecture series at the University of Washi
ngton that hosts scholars working across applied areas of data science\, s
uch as the sciences\, engineering\, humanities and arts along with methodo
logical areas in data science\, such as computer science\, applied math an
d statistics. Our presenters come from all domain fields and include occas
ional external speakers from regional partners\, governmental agencies and
industry.\n&nbsp\;\n\nThe 2024-2025 seminars will be held in person\, and
are free and open to the public.
