SUMMARY:UW Data Science Seminar: “Rose” Ziyu Xu (徐子瑜)
DESCRIPTION:\nPlease join us for a UW Data Science Seminar featuring UW Dig
ital Arts and Experimental Media Ph.D. student “Rose” Ziyu Xu (徐子
 瑜) on Tuesday\, October 6th from 4:30 to 5:20 p.m. PT. The seminar will
be held in HCK 132.\n“Name That Move: Movement\, Machine Learning\, and
Interactive Performance”\nAbstract: How can bodily movement become mater
ial for interactive sound and visuals? In this talk\, dance artist and dat
a scientist Rose Xu 徐子瑜 will introduce Name That Move\, an open-sour
ce toolkit for recording wearable motion-sensor data\, training personaliz
ed movement classifiers\, and connecting live predictions to creative syst
ems such as TouchDesigner. Drawing from her research in dance\, machine le
arning\, and new-media performance\, Rose will trace the project’s devel
opment from a concert-performance system into a reusable tool for artists
and researchers.\n\nThe session will include a live demonstration and oppo
rtunities for audience interaction\, while also exploring the creative dec
isions involved in teaching a machine a movement vocabulary. No programmin
g experience is required. This work grew from Rose’s PhD research in the
Department of Digital Arts and Experimental Media (DXARTS)\, and was deve
loped into an open-source toolkit through two quarters of collaboration wi
th Bryna Hazelton in the UW eScience Institute’s Data Science Accelerato
r program.\n\nSpeaker Bio: “Rose” Ziyu Xu (徐子瑜) is a researcher\
, choreographer\, and performer working at the intersection of dance\, new
media arts\, and machine learning. Rejecting the dichotomy of art and sci
ence\, she explores how shared human questions can be articulated across d
ifferent disciplinary languages. Rather than complying with AI to generate
or replace creative labor\, Rose designs artist-centered machine learning
systems that deeply listen and respond to lived\, embodied experience. Ov
er the past years\, Rose’s practice evolved from multimedia dance theate
r toward interactive systems integrating extended reality and computationa
l intelligence\, using the stage as a site to prototype future relationshi
ps between bodies\, media\, and computation. Across these works\, Rose inv
estigates how digital systems might engage embodied experience without era
sing agency\, ambiguity\, or care.\n\n\nThe 2026-2027 seminars will be hel
d in person\, and are free and open to the public.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
