SUMMARY:UW Data Science Seminar: Boris Kovalerchuk
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a UW Data Science Seminar featuring Central
Washington University Professor of Computer Science Boris Kovalerchuk on W
ednesday\, May 6th from 4:30 to 5:20 p.m. PT. The seminar will be held in
IEB G109.\n"Artificial Intelligence and Visualization: Moving to Visual Kn
 owledge Discovery"\nAbstract: Integrating artificial intelligence/machine
learning (AI/ML) with visualization is an emerging and transformative para
digm for analyzing high-dimensional data and developing explainable AI/ML
models that domain experts can understand and trust\, rather than black-bo
x models. This interdisciplinary field is now termed as Visual Knowledge D
iscovery (VKD). While classical orthogonal Cartesian coordinates have been
a backbone of science for 400 years\, they visualize only 2D or 3D data.
Parallel Coordinates removed this limitation only for some types of data.
The key new opportunity here is in a lossless visualization of high-dimens
ional data with emerging General Line Coordinates (GLC). A summary of curr
ent advancements and future challenges in the AI and Visualization frontie
r based on the Concepts of Visual Knowledge Discovery and General Line Coo
rdinates will be presented.\n\nSpeaker Bio: Dr. Boris Kovalerchuk is a pro
fessor of Computer Science at Central Washington University. His publicati
on activities include five books published by Springer: ”Data Mining in
Finance (2000)\, “Visual and Spatial Analysis” (2005)\, “Visual Know
ledge Discovery and Machine Learning” (2018)\, “Integrating Artificial
Intelligence and Visualization for Visual Knowledge Discovery” (2022)\,
and “Artificial Intelligence and Visualization: Advancing Visual Knowle
dge Discovery” (2024)\, chapters in the Data Mining/Machine Learning Han
dbooks (2006\, 2010\, 2023) with total over 200 publications. He coined th
e terms Visual Knowledge Discovery (VKD) and General Line Coordinates (GLC
)\, which link AI/ML and visualization frontiers. Dr. Kovalerchuk has been
a principal investigator of research projects supported by the US Governm
ent agencies and a senior visiting scholar at the Air Force Research Lab.
He delivered relevant tutorials at major conferences.\n\n\nThe 2025-2026 s
eminars will be held in person\, and are free and open to the public.\n\n
