Democratizing data science: Perspectives from the Community Data Science Workshop and Software Carpentry

Benjamin Mako Hill, assistant professor in communication, will present an approach to democratizing data science through his work developing and implementing the Community Data Science Workshops. Slide deck: “Democratizing Data Science”.

Ariel Rokem, a senior data scientist at the eScience Institute, will discuss the approach that Software Carpentry is taking to democratizing data science. Slide deck: “Software Carpentry and the democratization of data science”.

We will discuss the similarities and differences across these approaches to democratizing data science and what the implications are for the future of data science. We will also discuss the challenges and opportunities that accompany these types of intensive workshops.
