We are in the midst of a generational shift in research, and research funding opportunities, driven by new 'disruptive' technologies.  The rapid emergence of a new world of science driven by very large scale data, next generation sensors, and advanced robotic instruments, in a host of disciplines from the environmental, physical and other sciences and engineering through public health and medicine, requires research universities to make a new set of high-level specialty faculty and technical skills and resources available to research endeavors and proposals in order for them to remain competitive.

About Us

The University of Washington eScience Institute was formed in January 2008 by the Vice President for UW Technology and the Provost, in partnership with key Deans and a group of highly distinguished research faculty, to address the critical needs of "data-intensive science", within UW's characteristically entrepreneurial, highly leveraged, and interdisciplinary model.

The Institute is led by the Interim Director, Ed Lazowska, Professor and Bill & Melinda Gates Chair of Computer Science & Engineering, with oversight from a Steering Committee made up primarily of distinguished researchers and chaired by Vice Provost for Research Mary Lidstrom. The Institute reports on technology issues to the Vice President for UW Technology, and on academic issues to the Provost.

The eScience Team is comprised of a number of individuals in coordinating roles, including Erik Lundberg (Operations Director), Chance Reschke (Technical Coordinator), and Mette Peters (liaison to the UW Health Sciences research and clinical communities). A team of Consulting Scientist/Research Engineers are available to assist with application of computational methods, tools and other resources to data-intensive science and research efforts across the University. Consulting Scientists include: Bill Howe, Jeff Gardner and David Beck. Marya Dominik provides administrative support, and Mani Soma provides administrative oversight.
